James Shoshone on horseback

James Shoshone Jr. was born in Carson City, Nevada, in 1972 and raised among his mother’s people, the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California. Growing up in Woodfords, California, he was immersed in the cultural traditions of his community, which sparked a lifelong passion for artwork, craftwork, and cultural preservation.

As a skilled buckaroo artist, James specializes in buckskin tanning, beadwork, and tying fans. His beading work and traditional crafts reflect his deep respect for cultural traditions and his dedication to keeping them alive. James learned his craft from experienced hide makers in Northern Nevada and Southern Idaho, and he views these practices as a connection to the ingenuity and resilience of his ancestors.

Currently, James resides in Owyhee, Nevada, on the Duck Valley Shoshone and Paiute Indian Reservation with his wife, Robin Egan. Through his artistry and craftsmanship, he continues to honor and share the rich cultural traditions of his people, inspiring others to appreciate Indigenous art forms and their cultural significance.
